Looking back at an artistic photography project I did at university in 2003
As a photographer, do you ever find yourself reminiscing about your early days learning the craft? It can be pretty nostalgic to look back at old photos from film days or your studies.
Here's a project that gives me those nostalgic goosebumps from my first year in the photography degree course at the University of Portsmouth back in 2003. I shot it on 35mm black and white film at 3200 ISO, focusing on capturing the essence of one word: "City".
Here are three images from that project. I went with long exposure techniques and captured different stories by having friends pose in various urban settings. The original series had 12 images like these, each titled "North", "North East", "East", and so on. The whole series was called "Midnight", creating a fictional narrative of different events happening across the city at the same time.
Unfortunately, I've lost the prints and negatives from this project, and these three pictures are all that's left. But on the bright side, it's nice to take this trip down memory lane and see how much I've grown as an artist.

Who inspired me?
Back then, I was really inspired by the works of Martin Parr, Jeff Wall, and of course, the legends like Henri Cartier Bresson and Brassai.
