Lake Como is an extraordinary destination that captivates visitors with its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Nestled in the northern part of Italy, this glacial lake is surrounded by majestic mountains and picturesque villages, making it a prime spot for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure.
The allure of Lake Como lies in its breathtaking scenery. The crystal-clear waters of the lake reflect the surrounding mountains, creating a postcard-perfect image that is hard to resist. This aspect makes it the perfect location to take your camera.

Here is a collection of images I created during a visit. The scenery was awash with lush green hillsides, charming villas and historic estates lining the shores. With so many photo opportunities, sometimes it felt impossible to put my camera down. Particular highlights were walking along the shore as the sun sets. It was so relaxing to see the shimmer of the sun on the water.

In conclusion, Lake Como is not just a beautiful destination; it is a place where nature, culture, and adventure intertwine to create an unforgettable experience. Whether you are exploring the enchanting towns, indulging in local delicacies, or simply soaking in the breathtaking scenery, Lake Como truly is an awesome destination that offers something for photographers seeking their next adventures.
How to get there on public transport
Lake Como is easy to get to if traveling from abroad. You simply need to get a flight to Milan, then board a train to Milan Centrale station. From there, it's just a short railway journey to the lake. For me, this final leg took less than an hour.
Where to stay
The lake itself is shaped like an inverted 'Y', with three branches that create a unique landscape, offering a variety of scenic views that change with the seasons. It's best to stay in the middle as it'll give you easy access to all three branches of the lake.
Visitors can take leisurely boat rides across the lake, allowing them to soak in the panoramic views and explore the hidden coves and charming waterfront towns. Here are the three settlements I'd recommend staying in:
Bellagio
Often referred to as the "Pearl of the Lake," Bellagio is famous for its cobblestone streets, elegant gardens, and breathtaking views from its elevated position.
Varenna
With its colorful houses and romantic lakeside promenade, Varenna offers a quieter, more intimate atmosphere. This town is ideal for those coming via train as it has a station.
Menaggio
Menaggio is another lovely town known for its beautiful waterfront and vibrant piazza, where visitors can enjoy local cuisine and shop for artisanal products.
Each town provides a distinct experience, making it easy for visitors to explore and discover the diverse offerings of the region.
