Stepping behind he scenes in creating a ghostly still life set up

What better way to get into the spirit of All Hallow's Eve than indulging into some toy / still life photography? With the help of your camera, you can really soak up the Halloween festivities.

Watch the video above for advice on how you can create a nifty setup where you are.

Props and location

I snapped this picture at a park and set up the scene on a cut tree stump. The circular patterns in the wood matched the round shapes you see in the photo. If you're considering doing something like this, you might want to use these props:

  • Skeleton Halloween decoration figure

  • Mini pumpkins

  • Chalk

  • Tealight candles

  • Baby powder

How to create the fog

If you're looking to set the mood and the weather isn't cooperating, don't worry—you can make your own fog! Here are three suggestions to get you started:

  • Spray baby power

  • Blow vape smoke (not ideal for large scenes)

  • Use a mini fog machine (not ideal for outdoors)

As you can see in the video above, I opted for the baby powder effect.

The finished result

Here's what the final result looks like after a few tweaks in post-production.

Due to the nature of shooting outside, the wind kept blowing out the candles. To work around this, I took several shots with each candle lit one at a time. Later, I combined them all using multiple layers in post-production.

Like what you see?
